Practical information.

Location: Iceland is in the North Atlantic Ocean. Close to Greenland, midway between North America and Europe.

Weather: If you don’t like the weather, just wait for 5 minutes. This little pun is sometimes told at the expense of the icelandic weather as you can expect many types of weather at the same day. The average July temperature in the southern part of the island is 10–13 °C (50–55 °F) and a little colder in the northern part. Early and late summer it is little colder. Strong winds are common and northerly winds during the summer can be really cold but warm summer days can reach 20–25 °C (68–77 °F). Rainy days can be expected throughout the summer, sometimes associated with high winds. The average winter temperature in the southern part of the island is around 0°C (32°F) and a little colder in the northern part. But variations can be substantial and one could expect anything from +10°C to -10°C (50°F to 14°F) Strong winds are common and wind chill can be considerably higher. In the winter you can expect rainy days as well as snow, although heavy snow at sea level is not common.

Clothing: Therefore it is strongly recommended to bring warm and protective clothing, especially for hikers and those who like to spend time outdoors. Rainwear, warm hats and gloves, as well as water resistant boots are recommended. In summer you should bring sun protection and light clothing as there are nice and sunny days. Both in summer and specially in winter remember that weather changes quickly, unfortunately, not always according to weather forecasts. Don’t forget swimwear as there are many possibilities to take a dip in a warm geothermal pool.

Electricity and IT: Electricity is 220 volts A/C and the standard European two round pin plugs are mostly used. GSM mobile coverage is very good, covering most of the country. WiFi connections are available in most hotels and guesthouses, many free of charge.
